Fota Island

Fota Island, County Cork, Ireland

Golf on Fota Island dates from 1883 when a nine hole course was laid out. The present Fota Island Golf Club was designed in 1993. The course underwent major redevelopment in 1998 with all the greens rebuilt and eight holes redesigned. In its short history, Fota Island Golf Club has hosted the Irish Club Professional Championship, the Irish PGA Championship and the Irish Amateur Open. It hosted the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002 when won by Colin Montgomery and Soren Hansen respectively. Fota has received very favourable reviews in Golf Digest, ” Depending on how you see your shot in your mind, you could be playing any of three different clubs. In other words, it makes you think. It’s real golf”.
