Carton Montgomerie
Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland
Founded: 2002
Course Architect: Colin Montgommery.
Inland Links: Par 72.
Standard Scratch Score: 73
Length: 6,821 yards.
Located at Carton House, Maynooth, just 30 minutes drive from Dublin’s city centre, is one of Ireland’s greatest estates, comprising of a superbly preserved historic mansion house surrounded by over 1,100 acres of mature parkland.
In July 2003, a second championship course, designed by former European number one, Colin Montgomerie, opened for play. Quite different yet complimentary to the O’Meara course, on the higher ground overlooked by Tyrconnell Tower, this “inland links” style course, features penal and strategically placed bunkers, run-offs into cavernous swales and incredible contouring on and around the greens.
On Montgomerie’s visit to Carton in April 2003, he said “In designing this course, I attempted to go back to a more traditional course. My philosophy was, “let’s go back, but let’s make it different”, and that is what we have achieved”
“I’m very proud of this course. It’s unique and quite simply, superb. The greens are better than anything I’ve seen anywhere and it’s such a links-style that you expect to see the sea over the wall of the estate, but it’s not there”
The Montgomerie course demands precision – you need guile, skill and bravado to conquer it. A visual and sensual journey of demanding but highly pleasurable golf awaits the visitor.
