The present Fota Island Golf Club was designed in 1993 and underwent major re development in 1998 with all the greens being rebuilt and eight holes redesigned. In its short history, Fota Island Golf Club has hosted the Irish Club Professional Championship, the Irish PGA Championship and the Irish Amateur Open. It was venue in 2001 and 2002 venue for the Irish Open when it was won by Colin Montgomery and Soren Hansen respectively.
Fota has received very favourable reviews, in Golf Montly, "It's a mark of imaginative design when a new course appears old before the paint has dried…" and Golf Digest, " Depending on how you see your shot in your mind, you could be playing any of three different clubs. In other words, it makes you think. It's real golf".
