  1. The Open is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf and is the only major played outside the United States. The Open is traditionally played in mid-July at the height of the British summer.
  2. The Open was first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland and in its early years was dominated to such an extent by British golfers that it was not until 1907 that Arnaud Massy of France became the first winner from outside the UK.
  3. Champions over the years reads like a list of the greats of the game over the years from Old Tom Morris, Bobby Jones to Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Tiger Woods to name but a few. The Open is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Golf calendar and is televised by SKY and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
  4. The Open has always been played in Scotland or England with the exception of 1951 and 2019 when it is being played again at Royal Portrush. Five courses in Scotland, St Andrews Old Course, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Troon and Turnberry and four in England, Royal Brokdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes, Royal Liverpool and Royal St Georges make up the remaining nine courses on the current rotation. All the venues are links course which along with the vagaries of British summer weather distinguish The Open from the the other majors. Prestwick, Musselburgh, Royal Cinque Ports and Princes are the only other courses to have ever hosted The Open.
